On being human
What is man that thou art mindful of him?" This is a basic question that must be answered if we are to understand the reason for government and what its powers and limitations must be. Is man simply the latest stage of evolution of primates, a hairless ape? Or is there more because of the presence of mind? Cogito Ergo Sum seems to set man apart from all the other beasts of the field and of the wild. Is this simply the hubris of ego or is it truly a difference of kind not simply of degree. Should we seek refuge in the mindless herd of the collective or should we take advantage of the fact that we can truly be individuals? These are hard questions but they deserve answers. Not all are willing to face the challenge. Many would rather assume the fetal position and turn the electric blanket up to nine while a courageous few will brave the cold and strike out for a future that is difficult and wearying but leads to true liberty. Which will you chose?
