On the enslavement of a people.
The push toward Socialism and social engineering is really a means to establish despotism. Socialist societies in Europe survive largely because they are propped up by the evil capitalist west. If Socialism was actually a viable economic system they would have been immune from the collapse of the stock and real estate markets in the Capitalist United States. The sudden threat to the support from the US has thrown the European markets into Chaos.
Socialism, like Communism can only function if human behavior is remodeled. Socialist leaders recognize this fact and have established Madras like education systems in American Universities where education in "social awareness" takes precedence over hard subjects like math, literature, logic, and science. Socialists realize that the real threat to Socialism is a populace that is capable of critical thinking so this is a skill that is assiduously avoided. I found a number of books on the subject in the trash cans at the school where I formerly taught. (I rescued these from the book burners) None were in the library. That fact alone speaks volumes. These books deal with many things including the recognition of sophistry and the analysis of political rhetoric, two abilities that seriously endanger Socialism.
As Orwell pointed out in 1984, Socialism is built like a pyramid. At the apex is the inner party, these are the people that realize, and profit from, the fact that Socialism is a mechanism for the acquisition of power. Access to this level is guarded and protected vigorously and is limited to a very select few. The next level down is the outer party, These are the "true believers" in the concept, the converts, if you will. These people are convinced by the theoretical arguments put forth by "intellectuals" and are pathologically incapable of listening to a counter argument. Finally, at the base of the pyramid are the "Prols" as Orwell called them, the Proletariat. These people find the arguments attractive for a different set of reasons. For them Socialism removes the link between cause and effect, it separates consequences from action and creates the illusion of freedom without responsibility. This is the saddest group of all for they are enslaved to a concept they do not understand and are held captive by forces they do not even know exist. And the saddest part of all is that they will remain in this condition for they know nothing better. The worst form of slavery is when the people under the yoke are unaware of their own servitude.
